Job Description

As a member of the Communications Team, the Communications Designer helps shape the visual branding of Smarter Good and its nonprofit and social enterprise client partners. The Designer works with the Design Lead and collaborates with writers, editors, and account managers to create concepts and translate content and data into visual assets that effectively convey clients’ messaging to their intended audiences and across relevant platforms. They are responsible for working on several creative projects for multiple clients simultaneously, ensuring their communication needs are met with 110% enthusiasm and quality. The ideal candidate possesses a global mindset and a commitment to helping social sector organizations around the world scale their impact. 

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Execute comprehensive and strategic communications plans to meet clients’ fundraising, business, or organizational goals
  • Understand the clients’ work, programs, and issue areas, and collaborate with the Comms Team to strategically develop, plan for, and visually integrate key messages in collaterals, campaigns, and initiatives
  • Ensure that strategies and initiatives are aligned with identified fundraising objectives based on a thorough market/audience analysis and have measurable results
  • Provide creative visual concepts for a variety of communications materials – from annual reports and websites, to infographics and virtual event collaterals – and present them confidently to both internal team and client
  • Create communications materials, including but not limited to annual reports, newsletters, one- or two-pagers, impact stories, press kits, websites, blogs, and other attention-grabbing pieces that advance the fundraising goals of nonprofits and social enterprises
  • Translate client-centric narratives and elaborate documents into bite-size, digestible content that captures the client’s voice/branding and resonates with varied audiences
  • Enforce the production schedule and distribution of print and electronic communication; ensure designed materials are internally approved before sending to client; ensure timely delivery and maintain a high level of client service; and develop and/or adhere to client’s brand guidelines
  • Strategize, create, post, and manage content for Smarter Good’s website, blog, and social networking sites 
  • Help improve the quality of fundraising, marketing, business development, and branding materials and other collateral for external audiences
  • Conceptualize and design internal communications materials

Desired Qualifications

  • 2+ years of combined experience in creative work for marketing, advertising, nonprofit, and/or fundraising
  • Proven track record in increasing brand audience and engagement
  • A university degree in Marketing, Advertising, Journalism, Communications, Business, or related field
  • Strong command of English (US), with background or experience in copywriting
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Experience in and/or genuine interest in fundraising, international development, social entrepreneurship, and the social sector is an advantage
  • Experience in design and aptitude in design software particularly, but not limited to, Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, XD); knowledge in basic HTML, CSS, or other programming language a plus.
  • Time management skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, small-team environment and make decisions and revisions quickly 
  • Openness to a variety of ideas from different collaborators and possesses a ‘can get the job done’ mentality 
  • Keen attention to detail; a self-starter, and has an entrepreneurial spirit
